Morris Street

Sainte-Thérèse
2024

The Morris Street in Sainte-Thérèse was one of the streets in need of revitalization to enhance the historic buildings lining it.

The initial concepts of narrowing the street to create a one-way street, while providing more space for active transportation and vegetation, resonated with Opaysage. They worked closely with the City of Sainte-Thérèse Engineering Service to rejuvenate the Morris Street. This initiative reinstated the importance of large-scale trees, allowing for the creation of refreshing shaded areas during periods of intense heat.

A new configuration of the once linear street was even planned to break this linearity. This approach serves, on one hand, to create a sinuous aesthetic, but above all, to make the street safer by reducing vehicle speed.

In the years to come, residents and visitors will thus be able to enjoy the benefits of nature in this urban environment. Four types of verdant islands will enliven the spaces, ranging from flower-filled meadows to tree plantations embellished with natural stones serving as seating, as well as flowered lawns and rain gardens (vegetated swales). Two public squares have also been created, one at the entrance of Morris Street and the other midway, providing pedestrians, walkers, and cyclists gathering and resting places.

By integrating water management into these green spaces, creating specific parking spots along the street (bounded by permeable pavement), and using natural materials and urban furniture, this project embodies, in the long run, a myriad of fundamental principles of sustainable development.
